4 beverages with anti-aging properties

It seems like every research study being published recently supports that coffee is a healthy beverage. The latest report, in the November 16, 2015 medical journal Circulation, concluded that coffee drinkers have a lower risk of dying from heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and even suicide.

Let us talk briefly summarize this research, and then offer some hints about 3 other drinks that have extensive research supporting their healthy anti-aging properties.

All of these beverages contain various types of anti-oxidants in abundance— substances that may help protect the DNA contained in certain organs, such as our heart, liver, pancreas, and brain.

1) Coffee

The Circulation study (sponsored by the American Heart Association) followed the health of over 200,000 doctors and nurses for up to 30 years. The participants had regular physical exams, and were questioned about their lifestyle habits and diet, including their intake of coffee.

The report concluded that people who drank a cup of coffee a day had a 6% lower risk of dying during the study period. Participants who drank 1 to 3 cups had an 8% lower risk; 3 to 5 cups, a 15% lower risk; and above 5 cups, a 12% lower risk.

Notable is that if a person smoked, they did not get this benefit from coffee (cigarette smoking cancelled out the good effects from coffee).

Coffee hints: Coffee that passes through a filter is the healthiest (the filter removes potential harmful compounds), and to make coffee even better, try adding some 100% cacao powder and cinnamon, but avoid adding sugar (sweetener is ok).

2) Tea

Hints: Green tea is less processed than black tea, so contains a higher concentration of anti-oxidants than black tea. And white tea is even less processed than green tea, so is even healthier than green tea.

Green and white teas are more delicate, and the water used should be less than boiling temperature. Let them steep for 3 to 5 minutes, and avoid adding milk or sugar, which may cancel out the healthy effects of the anti-oxidants.

3) Pomegranate or blueberry juice

These fruits are known to have particularly high concentrations of anti-oxidants, but they also are more expensive than many fruits and fruit juices. You can make your own juices from other whole fruits such as papaya, melon, mango, apple, and pineapple. While they might not have the same concentration of anti-oxidants, they are super-healthy as well.

Juice hints: If you buy juice in a box, look at the list of ingredients to make sure they are not just basically sugar water with some added fruit. If in doubt, make your own, and include all the fiber in the fruit. Also note that pomegranates can interact with some medications, so check with your doctor if you are taking any.

4) Red wine

Wine hints: The main point about wine is that a little seems to be good for health, but exceed that and you are causing a lot more harm than if you didn’t have any wine at all. Women don’t metabolize wine as quickly, so they should limit their red wine intake to one serving a day (150 ml. or less), and for men, two servings maximum.
